The song comes from a amazing story! Ben Calhoun (Citizen Way) was leading worship at a summer camp and the leader of the camp asked what the kids had got out of that week. And a student said "Well, basically I learned that....It should have been me"
The song points out that it should have been us! What Jesus went through was because of us ,so it should have been us. By God's grace He sent his only Son to die for us ,but sometimes we forget that. "Guess it just leaves me saying Thank God, for the should've been." That is all we can do, is just Thank God for all that he has done!

This is one of my favorite songs, It is so true and what they are saying is right, it should've been us hanging on that cross instead of Him
